John is an experienced data scientist with expertise in extracting insights from complex problems using simplified models. He received his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Chicago. His work focused on the movement of molecules in complex systems in order to design the next generation of materials for hydrogen fuel cells, a renewable energy technology. His research investigated basic physics at the smallest size scales using the world’s largest supercomputers. After his PhD, John applied machine learning and data analytics to industry problems. At IBM Research, he developed a novel, patentable machine learning system to recommend novel reactions to organic chemists.
